Batter up!  It’s time to play ball in the Avocado League – a league that celebrates women and their love for baseball and Mexican avocados. This All-Star group of eight women will represent their hometowns and compete in an online contest by submitting a game day avocado recipe that best embodies the spirit, passion and flavor of their city. The “Big Hit” recipe – the one with the most online votes – wins the title of Avocado League MVP by general manager and owner, Mexican Hass Avocado Importers Association (MHAIA). The ‘Avocado League Commissioner’ is Jennie Finch, softball player, Olympic gold medalist, wife, mother – and fan of avocados. Visitors can vote for their favorite dish at http://www.TheAmazingAvocado.com where they can also get into the game by submitting their own avocado recipe and show the world that avocados aren’t just for guacamole anymore.  Recipes will be selected at random and the site will feature a new recipe daily. Votes will be counted until October 14; with the winner announced on October 19. The recipe with the most votes will be awarded the Grand Slam prize package, hailed as the league’s champion and MVP, receive a $1,000 grocery gift card and a year’s supply of avocados. Second and third place winners will also receive prize packages.

A new women’s friendship site, WhereWomenConnect.com, recently launched in Toronto and surrounding areas. This free site connects like-minded women looking to expand their social network, while enjoying activities that make life offline more interesting. Whether a woman is looking to create a golf foursome, join a book club, catch a chick flick, put together a women’s volleyball team or just find a few new friends to hang out with – members can connect by simply posting and responding to a local activity board. In addition to user directed activities, the site will also host group events. In fact, the site’s first event invited members to join team ‘WhereWomenConnect.com’ for the CIBC Run for the Cure that took place in Toronto on October 4th, 2009.  To celebrate the launch of the site, the first one hundred women to sign up will be entered into the site’s ‘First 100 Women Contest’ for a chance to win a $100 spa gift certificate, compliments of WaySpa.com.  “WhereWomenConnect.com recognizes the value of connecting with girlfriends that share common interests and experiences,” says site founder Jeanette Harrietha. “My goal for the site is to create a platform for women of all stages – new moms, singles, recently relocated, retired, etc. – to make such connections. Aside from being a woman, the only requirement for joining and using the free service is a positive spirit and a willingness to get out there and make life happen!”

Buying a car is a hassle for women, according to a recent poll conducted for CarMax, Inc.  When asked about their last car buying experience, a fourth of the women who responded felt a quick and effortless transaction was most missing, according the survey of more than 500 women. Fair, low pricing and having a trustworthy salesperson were also cited as the other top factors missing when buying a vehicle.  “Now more than ever, women want a car buying experience that is straightforward and fair,” says Donna Wassel, Southwest regional vice president of CarMax. “Finding a car retailer with low, no haggle pricing that offers an easy transaction with integrity can help take away the hassle.” The following are the results of the recent poll that asked women: Thinking about the last time that you bought a car, which of the following was most missing?

  • A quick, effortless transaction 25%
  • A fair trade-in value 19%
  • A trustworthy salesperson 15%
  • Low, fair pricing 13%
  • A reasonable finance rate 13%
  • Respect 2%
  • I have never bought a car 13%

The survey was conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of CarMax. The national sample consisted of more than 500 U.S. women, aged 18 and older who were interviewed online August 17 through August 19, 2009.

Claudia Opdenkelder, founder of CougarLife.com, is calling on women everywhere to help her put an end to what she considers ‘sexist discrimination’ by ABC. The network has refused to air her commercial during “Cougar Town” stating that even though the commercial met ABC’s broadcast standards, they had a problem with promoting a dating service for older women and younger men. CougarLife.com is the first dating site of its kind – where mature, independent women (never-married, divorced, and single moms) can date younger men. According to Ms. Opdenkelder, ABC’s last minute decision not to air her commercial came as quite a shock considering her team worked hand in hand with the network to create a commercial that would adhere to their advertising guidelines. “Unfortunately ABC has demonstrated a real lack of tolerance towards the diverse relationships American women choose to pursue,” she explains. Although other networks have begun to air the commercial, Ms. Opdenkelder is asking women of all ages everywhere to SIGN A PETITION demanding that ABC reconsider its current position and air the CougarLife.com commercial.
